Joe Thompson – President – After serving in the United States Air Force for 7 years as a forward air controller, Company President, Joe Thompson found his way into the Hospitality and Event business as a Banquet Manager and Food and Beverage Director. A tech guy by nature, Joe observed the service level and technical expertise provided by the Audio/Visual vendors that came through his Hotel and knew that he could do better. So in May of 1992, Joe founded Northeast Projections Inc., which is now known as NPi Audio Visual Solutions.
Over the next 25 years, Joe built the company into Cleveland’s premier event production company, with an impressive client roster and over 34 employees. Some of Joe’s favorite events include numerous Microsoft Product Launches, Easter at the White House and the many events that he produces for the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
In his spare time, Joe enjoys fishing, hunting and camping as well as spending time with his Fiance, Trina, his five children – Ashley, Hali, Joshua, Jacob and Justin – and his two grandchildren Emelie and Kalle. Joshua and Jacob can often be found on productions, carrying on the NPi torch for another generation.
Ted Van Hyning – Director of Production – Ted Van Hyning knew that he wanted to be involved in the live event production industry from an early age. In High School, Ted could be found running lights for a school play, acting as a roadie for his friend’s bands or cutting and assembling analog tape for a variety show. Ted earned a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications at Ohio University with a focus on Audio Production. While at OU, he could often be found at the Campus Radio Station, ACRN, where he hosted a Hip-Hop and Electronic music show and ran the Mobile DJ Service, or at one of Athens’ many bars, clubs or festivals, providing production and cutting his teeth in the trenches.
After moving to Cleveland in 2000, Ted found the corporate A/V industry – initially working for an in-house A/V provider that serviced many Hotels throughout Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. In 2002, he joined the Event Technology Department at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel, climbing the ranks from Technician, to Supervisor, and finally, to Director, a position he held for 8 years. In 2013, sensing the positive momentum in Cleveland, including the opening of the Cleveland Convention Center and continuing downtown development, he joined NPi as Director of Production.
Some of Ted’s favorite events that he’s staged since joining NPi include Content Marketing World, The Cleveland Clinic Patient Experience Summit and Akron General Hospital’s 100th Anniversary event.
In his free time, Ted enjoys the outdoors, wood working and remodeling and spending time with his wife Jenny and their 4 dogs and 2 cats.
Justin Simpson – Project Manager – You can say Justin Simpson has entertainment in his blood – his Father was a stunt ice-skater who wowed crowds nationwide with his daredevil act, which culminated in a jump through a flaming hoop on speed skates.
From the time he planned his first event – a birthday party – at the age of 12, Justin knew that he wanted to work in the entertainment and special events industry. Prior to joining NPi, Justin climbed the ranks of the business, working as a stagehand, runner, stage manager and technician. He was also the Production Manager at the World Famous Cleveland Agora for many years.
Justin particularly enjoys creating an event from the ground up and watching the audience have a blast at the show.
When he’s not producing events, Justin enjoys DJ’ing, playing golf, ice skating and traveling.
